Nepal after the floods: Helping children return to school

On 26 August, a catastrophic flash flood struck Nepal’s Rasuwa District and travelled rapidly downstream through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. In some places, water levels rose by approximately 100 metres, sweeping away homes, schools and severely damaging roads, bridges and entire communities. 

Scientists are still investigating the precise cause, but current assessments point to a suspected high-altitude ice-rock avalanche that temporarily blocked a river before releasing a massive surge of water and debris downstream. 

The schools supported by Human Practice Foundation are not located in the areas affected by this flood.

But for thousands of other children in Nepal, everyday life has been turned upside down.

Thousands of children have lost access to school

According to UNICEF, 18 schools have been completely destroyed and another 20 damaged. Around 10,000 school-age children urgently need support to continue their education, while at least 17,000 children have been affected overall.

For these children, returning to school is not just about learning. After a disaster, school provides safety, routine, social connection and a sense of normality. 

Our first goal: Help 5,000 children return to school

Our initial fundraising target is $880,000, which will support the recovery of 5 priority schools in Rasuwa and Nuwakot and help approximately 5,000 children return to safe learning environments, in collaboration with Khetan Foundation and the Government of Nepal. With additional funding, we aim to reach even more flood-affected schools and children.

Our priority is to get children learning again through temporary learning spaces and essential school materials. From there, we aim to rebuild and rehabilitate schools to be safer and more resilient to future disasters.

Before rebuilding, each school will be carefully assessed to ensure it is safer and better prepared for future floods and other hazards.

Funds raised will support temporary learning spaces and school supplies, school rehabilitation, clean water and sanitation, psychosocial support and stronger disaster preparedness.
